Browser - Register: Starting a New Transaction

Opening a tab and getting the first item on it

Overview

Starting a transaction means opening a tab and getting the first item on it. In Browser, the fastest way is to tap an item — if nothing is open yet, Register creates a new tab and adds that item to it in one step. There's no separate "start a new sale" button you have to find first.

What it looks like

The Register screen has a product grid in the center (organized into category tabs — the exact categories are configured per facility), a Search Items field and Barcode Scanner field above it, and the order/tab panel on the right showing totals as items are added.

Steps

Step 1: Find the item — either tap a category tab and browse the grid, type into Search Items,

or scan a barcode into the Barcode Scanner field.

Step 1: Tap the item's tile to add it.

Step 2: If no tab is currently open, Register creates one automatically and puts this item on it —

you don't need to open a tab first.

  • If a tab is already open, the item is added to that tab instead (tapping it again adds

another one — see the Managing Items in a Tab article for changing quantity afterward).

  • NOTE: for some items, tapping the tile prompts for a price first, before the item is

added. This only happens for items your role is allowed to price-override in Register.

  • NOTE: depending on your facility's terminal settings, tapping the first item on a new tab

can prompt an Enter Pin Code screen before the tab opens. Enter the PIN on the on-screen keypad to continue.

Step 1: To open a blank new tab without adding an item yet, use the + icon in the toolbar

instead. This always opens the Enter Pin Code screen — enter a PIN there to create the new tab, then add items as in step 1–2.

Step 1: Add notes if needed. The order/tab panel has an Add Notes field for general notes and an

Add Preparation Instructions field for kitchen/prep notes — both are optional.

Step 1: Review the totals on the right — item count, subtotal, and tax build as items are added.

Step 2: When the tab is ready, hand off to checkout — see Browser - Register: Checkout and Payment

Processing for the PAY step.

Common Questions

Do I have to open a tab before I can add an item?

No. Tapping any item creates a tab for you if one isn't already open. The + icon is only for opening a blank tab before you've picked an item.

Why did entering a PIN interrupt adding my first item?

Some terminals are configured to require a PIN before a new tab can open. This is a facility setting, not something tied to a specific item — if you don't recognize it, ask a manager.

Why did a price prompt appear before the item was added?

That item is set up to let your role override its price in Register. Enter the price to continue, or check with a manager if you don't have that permission and expect to.

Can I remove an item after I've added it, or change how many?

Yes — see Browser - Register: Managing Items in a Tab (quantity, price, discount) and Browser - Register: Removing Items from a Tab (deleting a line entirely).
