Register Settings : Adding New Menu Items To Order Behaviour
Choose whether repeated items combine on one line or each get their own
Overview
A new setting in Register Settings lets your managers control what happens when staff add the same item to an open order more than once. You can choose between two behaviors:
- Combine Similar Items — automatically increases the quantity on an existing line when the same item is added again. The order screen stays clean.
- Always Create New Order Line — adds each scan or tap as a separate line, regardless of whether the item already appears on the order.
Pick the option that matches how your staff like to work. Both are equally valid — busy F&B operations often prefer separate lines for clarity at the counter, while pro shops often prefer combined quantities to keep the order screen tidy.
When You'll Use This
You'll set this once and (mostly) forget it.
- When you bring on a new register or terminal, confirm the setting is consistent
- If your team's working style changes (for example, the F&B operation expands and you want separate lines for clarity), revisit the setting
Step 1: Open Register Settings
Navigate to Settings → Register Settings, then open the Register tab.

Step 2: Choose Your Behavior
Find the Adding New Menu Items To Order Behavior setting. Select one of:
- Combine Similar Items
- Always Create New Order Line
Save the setting.
How Each Option Behaves
Combine Similar Items
If a staff member adds the same item to an order more than once (for example, two scans of the same can of soda):
- The order shows one line for that item with a quantity of 2
- Adding it again increases the quantity to 3, 4, etc.
- The receipt prints one consolidated line with the combined quantity
Good for: pro shops, retail-style transactions, members buying multiples of the same item.
Always Create New Order Line
If a staff member adds the same item to an order more than once:
- The order shows two separate lines, each with a quantity of 1
- Each addition is its own row
- The receipt prints each addition as its own line
Good for: F&B operations where every item entry corresponds to a specific guest or seat, or any operation where staff prefers the visual clarity of separate rows.
What About Items with Modifiers or Combos?
Items with custom modifiers, combo configurations, prep instructions, or seat assignments always print as separate lines on the receipt regardless of this setting.
That's intentional: those items have meaningful detail per instance that has to stay visible. A burger with onions on the side is different from a burger with no onions on the side, even if they're the same menu item.
Common Questions
What happens if I switch the setting mid-day?
Items already on open orders keep their current behavior. Items added to orders after the switch use the new behavior.
Is this per-terminal or course-wide?
Both. You set a course-wide default in Register Settings, and each terminal can override it with its own value. If a terminal has its own setting saved, that wins for that register; otherwise the register uses the course-wide default.
Does this affect how items show on the F&B app vs Desktop register?
The setting applies in both the Register and the F&B app, so the behavior is consistent across surfaces.
Will this affect existing reports?
No. Reports always reflect total quantities and revenue, regardless of how items were entered. The setting only affects the order screen and receipt layout, not totals.
Do combo or modifier items ever combine onto one line?
No. Items with custom modifiers, combos, prep instructions, or seat assignments always show as separate lines, even with Combine Similar Items selected.
